Guilds are like sports clubs. Of course you can do sports without being a member in a club, but clubs add a lot to the experience. Being among likeminded individuals allows you to learn and grow together as a group. Playing regularly with the same group of people makes you better players since you get to know each other's playstyle and can guess your guildie's reaction in certain situations.

Yes, technically you could do the same with a close knit group of friends, but honestly, such a group is just a guild without name, too.

Of course there are "lone wolves" who don't like sacrificing a bit of their individual freedom and prefer to just join PUGs when they feel like it or play with henchies all the time anyway. Guilds are obviously not for them - but for the rest of us, they offer a great additional experience to GW.

I think guilds as a concept is a good idea, but I also think that there are WAY too many of them. I mean, I don't reckognize 80% of the guild tags I see every day.

The famous and large ones I know, but it seems to me that people just make a guild because they think it's cool to have one. There are way too many tiny guilds that no one knows of and it annoys me. Alliances helped that (sorta) because we can now smash small guilds together and make bigger ones but they still have seperate tags.

Give me 4 guilds total, and I think we'd actually have some real guild WARS. Right now just have catfights between 100's of tiny guilds...

As far as PvP goes, you could look at it this way;

HA is playing some Basketball down at the park with some buddies.

GvG is playing in a competitive Basketball league with a team.

If you are interested in that, you need a Guild.

i think guilds are an awesome part of guild wars itself; anet should keep it.

I mean you get to know people, help out others, give stuff to those who's in need and so on. You can also get status by joining a group of elite guilds - top ranked guilds --- just being with a nice bunch adds a lot to the game.

Guilds are not needed, but you'd be foolish to not belong to one. Whether you PVE or PVP, having a guild of likeminded individuals will only help you. Our sponsored alliance has a PVP guild and a PVE guild. We help one another out, such that if a PVE player wants to acquire rank, he or she doesn't have to step in with the sharks and get discouraged right off the bat. Likewise when PVP players need to skill cap the PVE guild is there to help.

I think resource exchange and knowledge transfer are two areas where being a part of a guild really helps. I can't tell you how many green/gold items I've given to guildies. Sure I could sell the stuff I've farmed, but that's a lot of effort and if a guildy wants it he can have it. When the time comes he'll repay me in kind. As for knowledge transfer, whenever the hot new thing comes out, chances are I know about it before someone else that is not part of a guild. For example, IDS and Queen farm runs were the rage when they first came out. Of course everyone in our guild had them before either was "over-farmed" and the drop rates reduced. It's very rewarding to teach the newer players different tricks and builds. Two nights ago I taught one member how to 55 and last night I taught another how SS. By the end of the night the two of them were taking on UW together.

In the end, I sign on because my friends are there. We chat on TS even when we aren't questing together. What's funny is that many people from other guilds know our TS and pop in just to hang out. That's always a good sign and I'm sure ultimately they'll join us.

Guilds are necessary if only for one reason: the party-making features in the game suck. That is, they don't exist.

Party making right now is only in Local chat, and only in the district you're in, and only between "W T.S" lines.

Guilds are not necessary in the Pve portion of game, because most missions can either be finished by PuG or henchies. However Guilds are extremely necessary in Pvp. In HA it would take 30-45 mins jus to get a group, but with a guild group the delay can be cut down. And you can get to know your guildies strength and weakness, so you can coordinate a better team to hold HoH.

They allow you to
-practice PvP builds (scrimmages)
-GvG (Guild Versus Guild without a guild= impossible)
-effectively go to Heroes' Ascent (because PUGs always ask for ranked people)
-avoid PUGs in PvE more often (because many people that are in PUGs don't synergize as well as if they are guildmates)
-make friends (because in PUGs the people change every time)
-->learn people's playstyles and adjust
-->synergize more when in a guild group
-->change/adapt your builds

So there is no reason not to join a guild.
Without a guild:
-Frustration with PUGs
-Fewer people inagme that you can talk to
-Less possibility of having fun on TeamSpeak/Ventrilo
-No GuildHall to instantly potal to to sell all your stuff instantly
-Need to port to Cavalon/Hosue zu Heltzer to get rid of faction
